Xiaomi Mi A1 Android Oreo Beta adds dormant fast-charging capabilities, latest update brings January 2018 Android security patch

Xiaomi rolled out Android 8.0 Oreo beta update for testers a couple of weeks back. There were reports that the update added support for fast charging. We were able to test the latest Beta ROM in our unit and can confirm that it indeed brings fast charging support for the phone. This works only when you use a fast charger and not with the bundled charger that has output of only 5V-2A.

We used Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0-certified fast charger (5V-2.5A/ 9V-2A/12V-1.5A) and it showed the phone is charging rapidly. Compared to 1 hour and 59 minutes without fast charging from 0 to 100% and 53 minutes from 0 to 50% when running on Nougat. The Oreo Beta with fast charging enabled charges the phone in 1 hour and 34 minutes and it took 41 minutes to charge from 0 to 50%. Xiaomi launched the device in September and has also decreased the price of the smartphone by Rs 1,000 recently. The Xiaomi Mi A1 is priced at Rs 13,999 in India.

Xiaomi has rolled out another incremental update for the beta users with the build number OPR1.170623.026.7.12.27 that already brings Android Security Patch for January 1, 2018 before Google’s Pixel devices. You can download the ROM from XDA Forum here and flash it manually at your own risk.

At the launch event Xiaomi says that the Mi A1 will get the Android Oreo update by the end of 2017. Looks like it is taking time to fix the bugs reported by beta testers. Hope we can expect a stable update in the coming weeks.
